STORY OF THE OFFICIAL 38th  GOVERNOR’S SEAL OF THE
STATE OF CALIFORNIA

The official Seal of the Governor of the State of California displays 31 gold stars representing the number of States in the Union following California’s admission in 1850. The Roman numerals along the lower rim of the seal indicate that Governor Schwarzenegger is California’s 38th Governor.

In comparison to the Presidential seal whose design remains the same for each administration, each Governor of California will have his or her own number depicted.

Central to the seal is the California State Flag whose design originates from the flag raised during the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846. This flag became a romantic symbol of independence and was adopted as the State Flag by the Legislature in 1911.

The State Animal, the California Grizzly Bear was the largest and most powerful of the animals living in the state- representing a spirit of independence, great strength and endurance, symbolizing California on the flag.

Positioned below the State Flag is the California Poppy. Cherished by the California Indian it became the state flower in 1903. The golden flower can be found blooming somewhere in California during every part of the year, growing wild throughout California.

Located above the flag is a golden sun, demonstrating the well known reputation of the state as the “Golden State.”
